JatA is one of the eight Vikriti varieties of recitation mentioned in the preceding number. The Jata is thus described by Yyadi: A learned man acquainted with the Jata mode of recitation will use it in the following manner: First the Krama, then the Vyuikrama. and again the Krama, i.e., JatA is the recitation of two consecutive words of a rich , first in their proper order (krama), then in the reverse order ( Vyutkrwm), and lastly, again in tlieir krama, order. As, for instance, take the first two consecutive words of the Tligveda %. First cite the words in the order of the text v,fu*n%, then in the reverse order it and again in their original order sgfunit. Thus the Jata recitation of these two words is it , and so of the other words. This is the principal characteristic of the mode. There are some other rules in connect ion with this, hut in a catalogue like this there is no need of mention¬ ing them. In the codex finder notice the whole Rigveda is reduced into the Jata form by an anonymous writer. Beginning, ’Siwnu / $. 1 *%l it ft wife 1 , # End. 'tTOr *r" msir! I Colophon. The text of the Madhyandina Sakha, White Yajurveda, or Vdjar 6tuieya Suuhitd, with accent marks. The Yajurveda consists of two parts,—the eukln or white, and the krithna or black. Of these, the former is called Yajasaneya Safihita, because it was handed over to" T&jnavalkya by the 8nn in the form of a vaji, or horse; and as it was done so at noon, when the sun is white, its name is eukla, or white. It has fifteen Sakhas or branches, as Kanwa, Madhy andina, etc., from the fifteen followers of Ydjnavalkya, who first read them. The Safihita is divided into 40 adhyayas. Each adhyaya is subdivided into short sections, called kandilm. The first adhyaya contains 31 kandikas, the second 34, the third 63, the fourth 37, the fifth 43, the sixth 37, the seventh 48, the eighth 63, the ninth 40, the tenth 34, the eleventh 83, the twelfth 117, the thirteenth 58, the fourteenth 31, the fifteenth 05, the sixteenth 66, the seventeenth 09, the eighteenth 77, the nine- tt-eulh 95, the twentieth 90, the twenty-first 61, the twenty-second 534, the twenty-third 65, the twenty-fourth 40, the twenty-fifth 4<, the t wenty-sixth 26, the twenty-seventh 45, the twenty-eighth 46, the twenty-ninth 60, tho thirtieth 22, the thirty-first 22, tho thirty- second 16, tho thirty-third 97, the thirty-fourth 58, the thirty-fifth 22, the thirty-sixth 24, the thirty-seventh 21, the thirty-eighth 28, the thirty-ninth 18, the fortieth .17,—altogether 1,975, The White Yajurveda has been edited in Europe by Dr. Albrecht Weber (Berlin, 1849), and in India by Satyavrata Samasraxm (Calcutta, Sk. 1796). The foUowing extract from Weber’s Indian Literature gives a general idea of the contents of this Saiihita :—“ The first 25 adhydyas contain the formulas for the general sacrifioial ceremouial; firat^i, ii) for the new and full moon sacrifice; then (iii) for the morning and evening fire sacrifice, as well as for the sacrifices to be offered every four months, at the commencement of the three seasons; next (iv— viri) for the soma sacrifice in general, and (is, x) for two modi ¬ fications of it; next (xi—xviii) for the construction of alte sfor sacred fires; next (xix—xxi) for the Sautr&mani, a ceremony originally appointed to expiate the evil effects of too free indulgence in the soma drink; and lastly, (xxii—xxv) for the horse sacrifice. The last seven of these adhydyas may possibly be regarded as a later addition to the first eighteen. At any rate it is certain that the last fifteen adhydyas which follow them are of later, and possibly, of considerably later, origin. In the Anukraraaru of the white Yajus, which bears the name of K&tyayana, as well as in a Parisishta to it, and subsequently also in Mahidhara’s commentary on the Sanhitd, xxvi—-xxxv are expressly oalled a khila or supplement, and xxxvi—xl Shrkriya, a name above explained.* This statement tho commentary on the code of Yajnavalkya (called Mitdkshara) modifies to "this effect, that the sukriya begins at xxx, 3, and that xxxvi, 1, forms tho beginning of an Aranyaka. The first four of these later added adhydyas (xxvi—xxix) contain sacrificial formulas which belong to the ceremonies treated of in the earlier adhydyas, and mint be supplied thereto in the proper place. The ten following adhydyas (xxx—xxxix) contain the formulas for entirely new sacrificial * “ For in the Anukramani of the Xtreya school these books bear the name Sukriyakanda, because referring to expiatory ceremonies ; and this name Sukriya, 1 expiating r (probably rather ‘ illuminating ? ’ ) belongs also to the corresponding parts of the Sahhita of the white Yajus, and even to the samahs employed at these particular sacrifices.”—Page 104, English Trans- lation. (Trubner & Co) ceremonies, viz. the pumha-medha (human ’sacrifice), the pitri- medha (oblation to the manes), and the pramrga (purificatory sacri¬ fice). The last adkyAya , finally, has no sort, of direct reference to the sacrificial ceremonial. It is also regarded as an TJpanishad,* * and is professedly designed to fix the proper mean between those exclusively engaged in sacrificial acts and those entirely neglecting them." it Beginning. *** ’S'lfl'itrur *t*t: h & ii if wt wt ffWs tffwf ^■r^rrr^y urgrtr Y s ST*r * ^ ^ I '* shffj t'urw nrrw & fr s wrai^ BB»:tnw gsrsmfr n vh End. vn^vri 5vtf$rftr fas* «—ft wt sw. rt*T§Tw II & f IItil (<> Colophon. tfo tfftmqr* • wrftft i*fe ii ffh wnfs (?) ii vtvcmv *r«tw %fa (?)
